Maker Monday Spotlight: EcoBlooms

MEET OUR FIRST MONDAY MAKER #WOMENINBUSINESS

Let me introduce you to EcoBlooms and the lovely lady behind the Brand.

Hey, Sylvia welcome to the Nourished Farmacy,  Coffee Connection & Collaboration.

#MakerMondaySpotlight I am super excited about your product and showcasing it to my readers, but first,

Who is Sylvia and what led you to start up EcoBlooms?

I’m a mum of 2 boys, who loves walking the dog. I’ve always been crafty with a make do and mend attitude (handbags from knitted jumpers and dresses and bunting from duvet covers) and love upcycling.
I’ve been very lucky to be at home while my boys grow up and started a couple of little business but in February I made a rose from a plastic lemonade bottle after watching David Attenborough’s Blue Planet series and the response on Facebook was overwhelming. I spent a week working on how to colour and getting supplies and haven’t looked back.

“David Attenborough’s Blue Planet was the real inspiration behind Ecoblooms”

Plastic recycling is a hot topic at the moment and it needs to be for the long haul. What tips could you give out on recycling plastic as so much confusion out there?

Sadly, we’re not equipped enough yet to upcycle. Other countries have start-up businesses that transform plastic bags into lampshades and old plastic toys into furniture. But we’d need councils and government to support these businesses and provide areas for people to bring their plastic. The biggest tip I can give everyone (until there are alternative ways) is to separate. Before you put your plastic in the recycling bin make sure the labels and lids are removed. These things are made from a different plastic to the bottle and can not be recycled together and the councils do not have the resources to separate them so if you leave them on, the bottle doesn’t get recycled.

What has been your favourite creation to date?

I’m struggling to pick just one………each flower I make has been completely designed by me (many after midnight breakthroughs and burned fingers) and so I have a deep mother’s pride and protection over each. However, I think I’m most proud of the fact that people are buying my flowers to give to their loved ones who are no longer here. I receive many messages from people who love that they can still give a dear one a present, or can have something around the house that will be a reminder of them forever.
I’m honoured to create something for someone that means so much.

What exciting projects have you got coming up with your business and Where do you see EcoBlooms heading in 2019?

My plan for 2019 is to take ecoblooms to restaurants and hotels and provide beautiful eco-friendly flowers for table decoration and reception areas.
